You might feel like you’re internally fractured or feel like something is seriously “wrong” with you. You might even be hiding who you really are just to fit in.

Challenges at work like task switching, juggling calendars, agendas, and endless to-do lists may leave you feeling exhausted and burned out. You may feel lost trying to manage life’s demands and feel like no matter how much you try, you can never stay on top of everything. There’s just never enough time.

Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy ❇

It can be difficult to meet the demands imposed by traditional environments and neurotypical standards when you are a neurodivergent women

Know that we see you! At Avatar Cognitive and Behavioral Center, we help neurodivergent women such as those with ADHD and autism (high-functioning autism and Asperger’s syndrome) overcome their unique challenges while fostering awareness, acceptance, and inclusion. Whether you’re seeking ADHD therapy for adults, therapy for adults with autism, or nNeurodivergent-Affirming Therapy for neurodevelopmental or neurocognitive conditions, we can help.

Our approach: Embracing neuro-inclusion

We live in a world that caters to neurotypical brains.

Many of the common systems in place, like schools, 9 to 5 jobs, and healthcare, were not designed to serve the neurodivergent women but rather serve and cater to the neurotypical.

At Avatar Cognitive and Behavioral Center, we stand out by embracing neuro-inclusion! We don’t just recognize and value neurodivergence; we celebrate it. Our unique approach, backed by the proper support and guidance, helps you harness your strengths and navigate your challenges so you can thrive.

Dr. Lisandra Mendoza

Puzzle pieces shaped in a heart

What is neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is a term coined by sociologist Dr. Judy Singer. It refers to the natural variation in individual brain function and development. In simple terms, it means that not all brains are the same. Different brains work differently.

These natural variations impact our thinking, acting, communicating, perceiving the world, and feeling.

Neurodivergence encompasses a variety of neurological differences, such as ADHD and autism, which are naturally occurring neurological variations among humans. These brain-based differences present challenges that need appropriate support and accommodations but also come with strengths and perspectives that should be acknowledged and respected. Through therapy, you can learn skills to thrive in a society of neurotypicals, integrating in a way that feels good to you rather than being excluded.

When talking about neurodiversity, you may also hear terms such as neurotypical, neuroatypical, and neurodivergent.

Neurotypical refers to what is deemed “normal” according to societal standards. It refers to individuals whose neurological development and functioning are considered “typical” by the medical community. Most systems and standards in society are designed for and around neurotypicals.

Neuroatypical or neurodivergent refers to brains that stray from what the medical community considers “typical.”

You can accept and appreciate your brain’s neurodivergence while also seeking support for your challenges through ADHD therapy for adults or therapy for adults with autism.

Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy helps those with:

At Avatar Cognitive and Behavioral Center, our psychologists and therapists are committed to avoiding negative stereotypes, showing empathy, and focusing on your strengths!

Avatar Cognitive and Behavioral Center aims to blend the medical and social models for neurodivergence. We believe that every individual’s neurodivergence is a crucial aspect of their identity and human experience. Our mission is to strengthen your identity and promote your mental well-being so that you can lead your life to the fullest potential.

We help you get the resources you need to create an environment that allows you to excel

Doing this takes a healthy amount of self-knowledge, self-understanding, and acceptance of the ways in which you deviate from and are underserved by neurotypical systems.

We trust that as science, technology, and society evolve, systems, too will develop practical ways to meet neurodivergent needs and continue to embrace diversity.

Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy treats differences in brain function and development as natural, but it also acknowledges potentially disabling challenges that neurodivergent folks face.

Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy (ADHD therapy for adults, therapy for adults with autism or other neurological differences) takes into account the social and physical environment that you exist in. You may be experiencing disabling challenges not inherently because of your brain differences, but because our societal and social structures are not designed to meet your needs.

At Avatar Cognitive and Behavioral Center, we are neurodiversity affirming psychologists and therapists.

When we address the challenges you face, we do so with empathy, acceptance, and kindness rather than judgment. In neurodivergent-affirming therapy, you have a safe space to discuss your difficulties navigating a world built for neurotypicals without fear of judgment or pathologizing.

You deserve to feel welcome, accepted, and seen! Unleash your potential with an experienced professional.

It’s our priority to create an inclusive environment that respects neurodiverse ways of processing information and communicating.

The language we use matters

When neurodivergent women are met with judgment or invalidation, shame grows. We are here to offer a validating space where you can express your cognitive, sensory, emotional, and communication needs.

Your needs are our priority

Are you still doubting if Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy is for you or if you are in the right place? Know that we approach care holistically, pulling from various cognitive, humanistic, and behavioral schools of thought to meet your unique needs:

Therapies we use:

  • For far too long, you may have been trying to avoid or control “negative” emotions like anger, sadness, or fear. With ACT, you’ll learn to accept whatever comes up for you so that those big, overwhelming emotions lose their power. If you’re ready to face your pain, define your values, and commit to living them, ACT can help.

  • If you’re engaging in behaviors that negatively impact your life, behavioral therapy can help you make positive changes. You would learn alternatives for problematic behaviors, especially related to school or the workplace. You would find rewards for successfully approximating the desired behaviors to empower your learning process. In behavioral therapy, you can improve conversational skills, respond appropriately to new people, maintain eye contact, manage schedules and appointments, and learn to be assertive. Behavioral therapy can help you establish healthy routines.

  • CBT helps you unveil the links between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It encourages curiosity and helps you replace unhelpful thoughts with healthier ones. You will learn the skills to recognize your patterns, and hence, with time… you can become your own therapist!

The neurodivergent often suffers from medical comorbidities, including pain disorder and sleep problems; know that CBT can also address chronic pain and insomnia. In CBT for Insomnia, you’ll learn to quiet your mind at night, set healthy sleep routines, and make minor adjustments with a significant payoff to get the rest you need. With CBT for chronic pain, we’ll put you back in the driver’s seat. You’ll cultivate a sense of physiological control and find some relief from your pain.

  • Cognitive rehabilitation benefits those who have experienced cognitive decline or loss of previous abilities and is restorative and compensatory. In cognitive rehabilitation, you can learn strategies to improve cognitive skills, ways to modify the environment to adjust to cognitive deficits and change lifestyles to improve overall brain health.

  • DBT teaches essential skills such as distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. You will learn to make informed decisions, reduce your emotional distress, and respond to situations more effectively. You’ll find that DBT promotes emotional stability, improved relationships, and a greater sense of overall well-being. It is conducive to learning to cope with sensory challenges.

  • You’ve probably heard of mindfulness—and together, we’ll explore its benefits. You may find that when you pay close attention, live on purpose, and release judgment; you experience a profound transformation. Improve patience, trust, love, kindness, and compassion for self and others are some of the benefits of this practice. I will also teach you stress reduction techniques to help you breathe through life’s chaotic moments.
