There are many reasons people go to therapy, including but not limited to the following: acculturative stress, adjustment to life transitions, affair recovery, anger management, anxiety, attention and concentration difficulties, autism, caregiver stress, chronic pain, cognitive difficulties, coping with physical disabilities and medical conditions, depression, divorce, domestic violence, emotional dysregulation, grief and bereavement, harassment, immigration stress, improving parenting skills, infertility or fertility issues, intimacy problems, maladaptive perfectionism, marital and family issues, sleep difficulties, social anxiety, smoking cessation, stress management, substance use problems, trauma, and weight management.
-
Therapy is the interplay of art and science grounded in theory and scientific research. It facilitates the exploration of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to develop self-awareness. In therapy, people explore healthier ways to understand and interact with themselves and others, learn effective coping skills and compensatory strategies for deficits, and process distressing life experiences. People evaluate their values in therapy and define action plans for a desired personal change.
-
The relationship between a mental health provider and a patient is sacred; generally, what is discussed during therapy sessions remains confidential. However, specific legal and ethical limits to confidentiality must be discussed during the informed consent process.
-
No, they don’t, as they are not licensed to prescribe medication. Counselors and psychologists can provide referrals to address medication needs.
-
The duration of therapy varies from person to person as everyone’s situation is unique. Several factors influence the length of treatment, such as the patient’s challenges, motivation, objectives, and more. Treatment can range from a minimum of three months to as long as six to twelve months for long-term therapy. The progress of therapy goals is frequently monitored to assess treatment outcomes. After completing therapy, some patients may schedule booster sessions.
-
Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all approach. There are various therapeutic approaches, including psychoanalysis and psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, and integrative. Discussing the best therapeutic approach in your case with your provider is essential.
-
Therapy sessions vary in their length. CPT codes, used to bill for medical services, categorize therapy as follows: 90832 (16-37 minutes), 90834 (38-52 minutes), and 90837 (53 or more minutes).

Neuropsychological and Psychological Evaluations
-
A provider will contact the patient to discuss the mental health needs and assess the goodness of fit.
-
The patient will receive an e-mail requesting that they complete a package of consent forms before the initial visit. Once the provider receives and reviews them, the patient can be scheduled for the initial appointment. At this time, a non-refundable scheduling fee will be collected. Patients should check the appointments, cancellations, and rescheduling policy in the consent forms. The remaining payments are collected at the time of service.
-
Neuropsychological and psychological evaluations vary depending on the type of report requested. Some evaluations can be completed during a single extended session, while others require multiple appointments (often three visits). Typically, the first visit is for the provider to complete a clinical interview, and the second is to complete assessment tools. The provider shares the results and recommendations during the last appointment and delivers the report.
-
The evaluation processes vary; some require a single visit, while others need more than one. The provider explains the process and notifies whether subsequent visits are necessary. Follow-up appointments are directly coordinated with the provider.

-
Therapy sessions are typically scheduled weekly or biweekly. Scheduling is coordinated directly with the provider. The treatment duration can be as short as three months to long-term therapy extending over six months. The treatment goals are frequently monitored. Once the treatment is complete, some patients might schedule booster sessions.
